The Paper-First Method vs vibe coding

Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI and accepting what it produces, steering by feel from prompt to prompt. The Paper-First Method, created by Sohaib Waheed, uses the same AI tools but puts a hand-drawn plan and a pushback session first, so the AI builds inside a structure a person decided.

What is the difference between vibe coding and the Paper-First Method?

Both use AI to write most of the code. The difference is where the decisions get made.

In vibe coding, decisions come out of the conversation. You ask, look at the result and adjust. In the Paper-First Method, the decisions are made before the first build prompt: drawn on paper, challenged by the AI, then written into a brief the coding tool has to follow.

When is vibe coding the right choice?

Vibe coding is good at what it's for: speed when the stakes are low. Use it when:

In those cases a page and a pushback session can be more process than the job needs.

When should I use the Paper-First Method instead?

Use it when a wrong guess costs more than planning first:

Is the Paper-First Method an alternative to vibe coding?

Yes, for anything that has to survive contact with other people. It keeps the speed of AI coding tools for the building, and moves the thinking to the start, where it's cheap to change. The seven steps show exactly where the person decides and where the AI builds.

Can I use vibe coding and the Paper-First Method together?

Yes. A quick vibe-coded spike is a good way to answer a question you can't answer on paper, like whether an API returns what you need. Treat it as research. Then go back to the page, put what you learned on it, and build the real thing through steps 2 to 7. The spike informs the page. It doesn't become the product.

Is the Paper-First Method slower than vibe coding?

To the first screen, yes. The planning comes first by design. What it buys is fewer rebuilds later, when you would otherwise discover what you meant halfway through. For reference, the recorded JobFuture build took about 45 minutes of planning and under five hours of building, from the first Cursor prompt to a live site.
